The #EndSARS United Sympathiser group has called for the full implementation of the findings of the judicial panels of inquiry established by state governments to investigate allegations of human rights violations against members of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies.
In a statement, the group urged them to compensate victims of police brutality across the country.
It also demanded, among other things, the release of all incarcerated EndSARS protesters, compensation from the state for unjustly imprisoning them, an open trial of all security personnel involved in the massacre, a public apology from the government for the massacre and repression, and full implementation of the ENDSARS 5 for 5 demands.
“We want to inform the general public about the aftermath of the Endsars memorial held at Havillah Events Centre, Oniru, Lagos State, on the 20th of October 2022,” the statement said.“The day started with procession at the toll-gate where we had masses who came out to show solidarity to those who lost their lives during the Endsars protest in October 2020. The procession which was peaceful until men of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of Nigeria Police Force, Lagos Command, fired canisters of teargas, sprayed water cannon at us, as law abiding citizens of Nigeria, we moved to the memorial event held in honour of our heroes.
“The police arrested some of our people who were conducting themselves orderly and thus deprived them of their rights before the intervention of some of us. At the memorial, the mood was solemn and sober; we held a minute silence for our heroes, different speakers and survivors of different types of police brutality.
“Gentlemen, sadly the men of the Nigeria Police Force have not changed which gives worrying concerns. We want to register again that the Lekki Toll Gate Massacre symbolises the tragedy of state violence against young Nigerians demanding for better nation with their pride, National Flag, and echoing loud their National Anthem.
“A direct oppression on our aspirations as young country men and women for a better nation; the challenges of this country are foundational and far above administration defects, although, governments have denied its responsibilities and react furious towards anyone who speaks the truth.
“Having held a successful EndSARS memorial to honour the EndSARS martyrs and heroes, we will continue to stand up against police brutality and demand for justice for #Endsars victims. Therefore our demands are;
“1. RECOGNITION OF BRUTAL KILLINGS AND PUBLIC APOLOGY BY GOVERNMENT2. RELEASE OF EVERY PERSON INCARCERATED OVER THE #ENDSARS PROTEST.
3. COMPENSATION FOR ALL #ENDSARS VICTIMS AND FAMILIES OF THOSE KILLED.
4. FULL IMPLEMENTATION OF REPORTS OF THE JUDICIAL PANEL OF INQUIRY.
5. PROSECUTION OF ALL SECURITY PERSONNELS INDICTED IN THE LEKKI MASSACRE.
6. FULL IMPLEMENTATION OF THE #ENDSARS #5FOR5 DEMANDS
“We know and convincingly that a new Nigeria lurks on the Horizon. It awaits our sculpting hands to bring it to birth. We remain undeterred and irrevocably committed to midwifing the glorious future it holds for us and generation yet unborn. We call on you all to join us in the collective endeavour to awaken the spirit of greatness in the sleeping giant that our country has become.”
