Reports from Rivers State indicate that sporadic shots of guns and teargas canisters were fired around the Government House in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

Media reports indicate that the shots were fired by either thugs or police officers.

A reporter in Port Harcourt told us  that sporadic gunshots were heard on Aggrey Road, about eight kilometres from the Government House. He said the shots were fired by elements suspected to be loyal to a state lawmaker in the camp of Minister Nyesom Wike.

The reporter said teargas canisters were also fired by police around the Government House to disperse youths believed to be backing Governor Rotimi Amaechi.

“We spoke to the police and they said the ban on any form of procession in the state was still on and that they had to fire the shots to disperse the youth,” the reporter said.

Other sources however said gunshots were also fired by the police.

Witnesses also report that armoured tanks have been deployed to the state assembly complex, venue of Tuesday’s violence where about five of the 32 state lawmakers tried to impeach the speaker. “The  Assembly has been shut down by police,” a source said.

Both Governor Rotimi Amaechi and the Rivers Commissioner for Information, Ibim Semenitari, could not be reached for comments. They did  not answer or return calls to their mobile telephones.
