Controversial artist Speed Darlington, popularly known as Akpi, has claimed that his recent disturbing confession about engaging in sexual activity with a minor was nothing more than a publicity stunt.
The rapper stirred outrage after alleging during an Instagram live session that he had slept with a 15-year-old girl—a statement that led to widespread backlash and calls for his arrest.
In response, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) confirmed it had escalated the matter to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for investigation.
However, in a new video posted on his Instagram, Speed Darlington stated that the confession was fabricated and intended to generate online buzz around his music. According to him, controversy is a tool many artists use to stay relevant and book gigs.
“That video where I talked about a 15-year-old—it was to provoke reactions. I’m an artist, and controversy sells. If you’re not trending, no one wants to book you,” he said.
He explained that the move was part of a promotional campaign for his latest single, “Village Girl,” which focuses on adult themes. He emphasized that he doesn’t produce gospel music and uses provocative content to drive attention.
“We use sexual content to promote songs like that. It was all part of the marketing. But if I offended anyone, I apologize,” he added. “For upcoming artists—this is how the game is played. That video was just me doing what we do: selling my brand.”
He ended the video with a message to fans and critics alike: “Peace!”
