South Africa remains a secure and welcoming destination for Nigerian tourists, business professionals, and visitors, according to the South African Consul-General in Nigeria, Prof. Bobby Moroe. Addressing rising concerns sparked by rumors on social media, Moroe clarified that travel channels between the two nations remain fully operational and safe.

Dismissing Visa Suspension Rumors

Speaking during an interview on Nigeria Info FM, the Consul-General firmly rejected claims that South African missions in Nigeria had ceased issuing visas to Nigerian citizens. He characterized these reports as entirely false, emphasizing that diplomatic offices continue to process visa applications without interruption.

“I want to give assurance to Nigerians that it is safe to travel to South Africa,” Moroe stated, dismissing the online speculation. “And it is also untrue to suggest that South African missions in Nigeria do not offer visas to Nigerians anymore.”

Soaring Interest in South African Travel

Far from a decline in travel interest, Moroe revealed that the volume of visa applications from Nigeria has nearly doubled recently. This surge reflects sustained enthusiasm among Nigerians looking to explore South Africa for tourism, corporate engagements, and personal visits.

He expressed confidence that this positive trend would continue, pointing to the deep-seated cultural and economic ties between the two African powerhouses.

Guidelines for a Safe and Legal Visit

While reinforcing the security of South African destinations, the Consul-General urged prospective travelers to take personal responsibility for their journeys. He advised visitors to keep the following guidelines in mind:

  • Secure the Correct Documentation: Ensure you obtain the necessary visa and strictly adhere to immigration regulations before departure.
  • Understand Local Laws: Familiarize yourself with South African laws and be aware of your legal rights while in the country.
  • Maintain Situational Awareness: Stay aware of your surroundings and note the locations of local law enforcement agencies in case assistance is required.
  • Be a Good Ambassador: Represent Nigeria positively during your stay.

By staying informed and respecting local guidelines, Moroe noted, Nigerian visitors can look forward to a rewarding, secure, and seamless travel experience in South Africa.
