Following a six weeks break, both house of the National Assembly will resume legislative duties today.
And ahead of the resumption, security has been beefed up, with more police than usual sighted manning strategic locations at the National Assembly Complex on Monday.
Three police pickup vans, full of policemen and women, were deployed at the first entrance gate from the Head of Service and Federal Secretariat axis.
A source at the National Assembly who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the increased security presence became necessary following security reports which suggested that some groups were planning to march on the National Assembly today to demand the Senate President Bukola Saraki’s resignation because of his trial by the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
He said: “You know what is happening to the Senate president is responsible for this. By tomorrow (today) a lot of people who don’t even have any business coming here (National Assembly) would like be here. “So, to avoid any state of lawlessness, the security around here needs to be straightened. Some groups may want to come and cause disorder in the name of protest.”
Meanwhile, rumours making the rounds that the senate will postpone resumption of plenary has been dispelled as mere hearsay.
Chairman, Senate Ad hoc Committee on Media and Publicity, Senator Dino Melaye and his counterpart in the House of Representatives, Hon. Sani Zoro, confirmed yesterday that the two chambers of the National Assembly would resume today after six-week recess.
Melaye, in a statement in Abuja, said: “I want to confirm that the Senate will resume tomorrow (Tuesday) and that we are set to carry out all our legislative responsibilities. “I also want to use this opportunity to announce the resolve of the Senate to do only those things that will promote the unity, prosperity and wellbeing of the Nigerian people.”
