Attorneys File to Abandon Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ Defamation Case
Imprisoned music mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is facing yet another setback in his ongoing legal struggles, this time involving his own legal representation. Sher Tremonte LLP, the law firm representing Combs in a high-profile civil defamation lawsuit, has formally requested to withdraw from the case, citing outstanding financial debts and a severe lack of communication from their client.
In a motion filed on September 14 in the Southern District of New York, partner Michael Tremonte revealed that Combs has failed to settle a substantial balance of legal fees, costs, and expenses for more than six months. The firm also alleged that efforts to reach the mogul to resolve the matter have consistently failed.
A ‘Total Breakdown’ in Communication
The attorneys painted a picture of a severely fractured professional relationship. According to court filings, Tremonte described the situation as a “total breakdown in cooperation and communication.” He noted that Combs had made himself virtually unavailable for “timely, substantive, and direct communications” for over four months, rendering effective legal representation “unreasonably difficult” to maintain.
However, Combs’ camp has disputed this narrative. Speaking through his spokesperson, Juda Engelmayer, the incarcerated rapper claimed that the decision to part ways was his. Engelmayer asserted that Combs chose to terminate his relationship with Sher Tremonte LLP due to unauthorized and unapproved charges that had inflated his legal bills.
The $100 Million Defamation Battle
The legal dispute stems from a multi-million dollar lawsuit originally launched by Combs in January 2025. Initially, the mogul sought $50 million in damages from Courtney Burgess, attorney Ariel Mitchell, and Nexstar Media Inc. (the parent company of NewsNation) over allegedly false remarks made during a broadcast.
Combs subsequently doubled his demands, seeking $100 million in damages for the alleged defamation.
Combs’ Continued Incarceration
This civil dispute unfolds against the backdrop of Combs’ ongoing incarceration. Following his arrest in September 2024, Combs was ultimately convicted on two counts of transportation for night work. Judge Arun Subramanian sentenced him to more than four years in prison at a New York courthouse in October.
Combs’ prison term has also seen recent adjustments. His projected release date was recently pushed back from May 8, 2028, to June 4, 2028, reportedly due to multiple disciplinary infractions while behind bars.
