The federal government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has earmarked N27 billion for the entitlements of former presidents, vice presidents, heads of state, chiefs of staff, retired heads of service, and professors in the 2025 fiscal year.
Beneficiaries include former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan, and Muhammadu Buhari, as well as ex-Vice Presidents Atiku Abubakar, Namadi Sambo, and Prof. Yemi Osinbajo. Also included are ex-military leaders such as Generals Yakubu Gowon, Ibrahim Babangida, Abdulsalami Abubakar, and Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe.
The 2025 budget, presented by President Tinubu, allocates a total of N1.4 trillion for pensions, gratuities, and retirees’ benefits. Of this amount:
- N2.3 billion is set aside for former presidents and vice presidents.
- N10.5 billion is allocated to retired heads of service and permanent secretaries.
- N13.5 billion is reserved for retired university professors.
- N1 billion is allocated for retired heads of government agencies and parastatals.
Investigations by The Punch on Saturday, December 21, revealed that the total allocation for these groups amounts to N27 billion, highlighting the government’s commitment to honoring its obligations to past leaders and retirees.
