Frontline environmentalist Mr. Alagoa Morris on Saturday revealed that Niger Delta communities were approaching extinction, a problem which he said was dangerous than oil spillage, pipelines Vandalism.
He expressed his concerns in the wake of recurring ocean surge and coastal erosion, stating that Niger Delta communities under this threat are Bayelsa, Ondo, Delta and Rivers states, among others.
Morris who is the Bayelsa State Coordinator, Environmental Right Action stated that “Communities’ lands along the coastlines are washed into the Ocean, rivers and creeks in the region on a daily basis”.
He called on the intervention of the Federal Government saying: “Federal Government should please show good example to the oil companies and not to leave everything about community development to them, as the government has been shirking its responsibility to develop the communities. Also, Federal Government interventionist agencies, state governors and philanthropists are all to collaborate together if we must conquer this evitable disaster”.
