A heated debate has erupted online after political commentator and former presidential aide Reno Omokri questioned the wisdom behind Afrobeats superstar Davido’s high-profile tribute to kidnapped Oyo State schoolchildren. While many praised the singer’s global advocacy, Omokri warned that such spotlighting could have dangerous unintended consequences for the victims.

Davido’s Global Stage Advocacy

During his performance at the FIFA World Cup Countdown Concert at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, Davido used his massive platform to draw attention to a recent tragedy in Nigeria. The Grammy-nominated artist wore a custom black jacket boldly inscribed with the names of 39 schoolchildren and 7 teachers who were abducted from the Ahoro-Esinle and Yawota communities in Oyo State.

On the back of the jacket, the words “Bring Them Home” were prominently displayed, while a white shirt underneath bore the name “Nigeria.” The emotional tribute was widely lauded by fans and human rights advocates as a powerful act of solidarity designed to keep international pressure on rescue efforts.

Why Reno Omokri Disagrees

However, Reno Omokri took to social media to voice his concerns, arguing that Davido’s gesture, while well-intentioned, could ultimately backfire. According to Omokri, drawing international publicity to kidnapping victims often increases their value in the eyes of their captors, making negotiations and rescue operations significantly harder.

Drawing from historical precedents, Omokri recalled the global #BringBackOurGirls campaign for the Chibok schoolgirls. He argued that the intense international media storm surrounding the case made the girls highly prized bargaining chips for Boko Haram, dragging out their captivity for years. He also referenced his personal advocacy for Leah Sharibu, noting that security experts later advised him that raising her global profile inadvertently complicated her release.

A Delicate Balance Between Awareness and Security

Omokri emphasized that the Nigerian government and security agencies are actively working behind the scenes to secure the release of the Oyo students and teachers. He warned that public campaigns can embolden terrorists, leading them to demand higher ransoms or tighten their grip on hostages.

As the conversation continues to divide Nigerians, the situation highlights the complex dilemma of high-profile advocacy: is it better to raise global awareness to force government action, or does silent, tactical diplomacy offer a safer path home for the victims?
