The secretary to the government of Borno State, Comrade Lucy Nana, has urged the United Nations (UN) to provide a counselling clinic to attend to raped girls in the crisis-ridden state. Nana made the call at the Quintessestial Business Women Association conference, held in Abuja recently, which centred on the economic empowerment of women in agriculture and in the utilisation of solid mineral products.
Nana described rape as a daily occurrence in the region and noted that mothers, who are afraid of the stigmatisation and society’s resultant ostracising of their daughters from the right of marriage, remain silence on the issue.
She urged the UN to help put up counselling clinics in the local government areas in the state to help the girls and women overcome such harrowing experiences.
She further said the proximity of the clinics would reduce for mothers the financial strains of transportation to Maiduguri for treatment in hospital and the hassles of filing reports with the police.
