Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently shared a personal reflection on his early life in the United States, revealing that he worked as a taxi driver and took on multiple side jobs to fund his university education.
In a message posted on X on Sunday morning, the President recounted the financial hurdles he faced as a young student abroad while pointing to his administration’s recent accomplishments in Nigeria’s education sector.
Overcoming Struggles as an International Student
Recalling his initial arrival in America, President Tinubu explained that he had to delay starting his academic program for several months just to save sufficient money. He noted that once he relocated to Chicago, he balanced several jobs simultaneously to cover living costs, tuition, and housing expenses.
Reflecting on those challenging years, the President expressed a deep personal understanding of the financial anxiety felt by students struggling to make ends meet while pursuing higher degrees.
Driving Educational Reforms in Nigeria
President Tinubu tied his personal journey directly to his government’s vision for national development, arguing that quality education transformed his life and should be accessible to every young Nigerian.
He emphasized that a child’s birthplace or family financial status should never determine their educational outcomes, reiterating his pledge to strengthen public education funding and expand learning opportunities across the country.
