A teenager from Kafanchan in Kaduna State was killed by a bullet shot accidentally during a police attempt to disperse protesters.
Suzana Alamagani (18) was killed during the protest at Kafanchan High Court on Friday.
Police Public Relations Officer Aminu Lawal later said that the girl’s death was “a case of accidental discharge”.
Lawal said that the police were deployed to the court to control over 100 youth who threatened to mob a lawyer.
He said the lawyer swindled some of them.
“We were out to calm the situation and in the process the incident happened,” he said.
A corporal who was part of the rescue team was hit on the head with a stone thrown by the mob.
The corporal fell from the police van holding his rifle and it accidentally discharged, hitting Alamagani.
Lawal said that the victim was rushed to the General Hospital, Kafanchan, where she was confirmed dead. The corporal was also hospitalised.
