Outgoing NYSC Members Assured Payment of Minimum Wage Back Pay

Ukanwa Ikechukwu, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member serving in Oyo State, was charged in an Iyaganku Magistrate’s Court with cheating a police officer of N235,000.
Despite Ukanwa’s plea of not guilty, the police charged him with false pretense and theft.
On Friday, Insp Olufemi Omilana, the Prosecution Counsel, informed the court that on December 4, 2022, at noon, Ukenwa allegedly took N235,000 from ACP Modupe Okpaleke with the intent to defraud.
Ukenwa, who studied physiotherapy and worked at the Police Cottage Hospital in Eleyele, Ibadan, stole the money from Okpaleke and used it fraudulently.
The police claimed that the NYSC member suggested Okpaleke buy a bicycle while she was seeking medical attention for a leg condition at the hospital.
According to Omilana, the offense breaches sections 390 (9) and 419 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State 2000.
Magistrate M. I. Giwa-Babalola granted the defendant N500,000 bail with two sureties in the same amount and delayed the case to May 25 for a hearing.
