There was confusion at First Gate bus stop, Tin Can Island Port, Lagos Southwest Nigeria this morning when a lady simply identified as Esther was crushed to death by a truck.
Eyewitnesses informed P.M.NEWS that the accident occurred when some policemen stopped a commuter bus driver and created a traffic jam when they tried to extort money from the driver.
It was gathered that the incoming truck overran the deceased who was identified as a staff of North Atlantic Agency, Tin Can Island, Apapa.
The Edo state, south-south Nigeria-born lady reportedly died on the spot while the policemen who allegedly caused the incident that led to the accident fled the scene immediately.
A few minutes later, policemen from Tin Can Island Division arrived the area to carry the corpse of the lady.
A mob attempted to attack the policemen who started shooting in the air to disperse the crowd.
They successfully removed the corpse and took it in their van to the station.
The situation at the First Gate bus stop was still tense as at press time. The driver of the truck that crushed the lady reportedly fled the scene before he could be apprehended by the angry crowd.
The Divisional Police Officer, DPO attached to Tin Can Police Division could not be reached at press time.
