Nigerian emergency officials said a fuel storage tanker carrying petroleum product caught fire on Wednesday after exploding at the Tin Can Island port in Apapa area of Lagos.

The vessel is believed to belong to MRS petroleum.

It could not be confirmed if anyone near the tanker was killed or injured. Photos sent by a citizen reporter show a burning tank near the port with firefighters working to stop the fire from the Lagos lagoon.

Reports say the explosion shook buildings as far as Ikoyi and Victoria Island.

Businesses in the area, particularly affected buildings, have closed shop to avoid causalities as firefighters battle the fire.

More details later.
