Waste has taken over a staircase at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, southwest Nigeria.

It learnt that many travellers and airport workers were shocked Monday when they saw a huge pile of waste consisting of waste food, empty plastic bottles of soft drinks, canned beer and other waste products under one of the staircases opposite the Port Health Centre of the international airport.

The waste, which oozed an offensive odour in and around the centre and a passage to the airport’s press centre, was believed to have been dumped at the spot by one of the restaurant’ operators at the international gateway.

Our correspondent observed that most of the travellers who were waiting to be vaccinated and pick their international vaccine cards could not stay at the waiting area because of the stench.

“This is an embarrassment to every Nigerian. How could any sane person dump food waste in a very sensitive place such as the health centre of the airport? This is the height of indiscipline and impunity,” said Akin Akinleye, a British-Nigerian who arrived on a Virgin Atlantic flight and saw the waste.

As at the time of filing this report, the waste had not been cleared.

Meanwhile, some officials of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria were seen inspecting the spot.
