A recent photo of retired Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo, who owns the Abuja property visited by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, has surfaced online stirring widespread reactions and curiosity across social media.

The emergence of the image follows growing public interest after Minister Wike accused the retired naval officer of land grabbing and illegal construction within the Federal Capital Territory.

The Man at the Center of the Storm

Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo, a retired officer of the Nigerian Navy, served as the Chief of Naval Staff from January 2021 to June 2023.

Born on April 22, 1966, in Kano State, Gambo joined the Nigerian Navy in 1984, specializing in Underwater Warfare with a subspecialty in Intelligence.

Academic and Professional Achievements

Beyond his distinguished military career, Gambo is highly educated.
He holds a PhD and a master’s degree in transport management from Ladoke Akintola University and is a fellow of several professional bodies in management, shipping, and security.

Career Highlights

During his service, he held key positions such as Director of Procurement at the Defence Space Administration and Commander of the Directorate of Naval Intelligence Annex.

As Chief of Naval Staff, he was credited with notable successes including the drastic reduction of piracy incidents in the Gulf of Guinea  earning him recognition such as the ECOMOG Peacekeeping Medal and the Admiralty Medal.

His long career and leadership have now drawn renewed attention amid the current Abuja land controversy.
