Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, traveled to Rome to attend the funeral of Pope Francis, joining global dignitaries, religious leaders, and mourners at St. Peter’s Basilica.
While in Rome, Obi described Pope Francis as a beacon of humility and moral integrity whose life exemplified leadership grounded in compassion and truth. He emphasized that the late Pontiff left behind a “legacy of light,” having devoted his life to serving the poor, uplifting the voiceless, and standing against injustice.
Reflecting on his personal experiences with the Pope, Obi shared that he had the honor of meeting Pope Francis on three occasions—each encounter leaving a profound impact on him. He highlighted the Pope’s humble nature and the peace he radiated, calling him a powerful symbol of what true leadership should represent.
Obi also spoke about his involvement with Scholars Occultantes, an intellectual group formed by Pope Francis during his time as Archbishop. The organization, dedicated to ethical leadership and societal transformation, helped Obi gain deeper appreciation for the Pope’s teachings and vision.
In his message, Obi called on leaders in Africa and around the world to draw inspiration from Pope Francis’ life by embracing values such as justice, peace, humility, and service to humanity.
He concluded with a heartfelt prayer: “May Pope Francis’ soul rest in perfect peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire leaders to govern with love and integrity.”
