In a detailed statement outlining his roadmap for the 2027 general elections, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has declared that his administration will prioritize robust human capital development to build a prosperous and productive Nigeria. Obi emphasized that his vision centers on unity, social justice, equity, and unlocking the potential of the country’s youthful population.

Recalling his ongoing pledge to put Nigeria on the path of national transformation, Obi revealed that his proposed policies aim to halt the decline in the quality of life of citizens, curb widespread governance abuses, and usher in a new era of sustained economic progress.

Focusing on Human Capital as Infrastructure

According to Obi, the core of his developmental strategy relies heavily on major reforms in the education and healthcare sectors. He described robust human capital as the indispensable infrastructure needed to drive economic expansion and deliver essential public services.

“These are foundational areas that we must reform with energy and determination if we are to reap the demographic dividend of our youthful population,” Obi stated. He argued that without a skilled and healthy workforce, sustainable national growth remains out of reach.

Tackling Out-of-School Children and Boosting TVET

To address Nigeria’s pressing educational challenges, Obi promised to take immediate action upon assuming office. His plans include:

  • Establishing an educational task force: A dedicated team focused on drastically reducing the high number of out-of-school children across the nation.
  • Revitalizing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET): Elevating vocational skills to support massive industrialization, particularly in agriculture and regional value-addition industrial parks.
  • Implementing a dual education system: Collaborating with private sector entities, faith-based educators, and social entrepreneurs to offer apprenticeship opportunities modeled after Germany’s dual education system.

Transitioning from Consumption to Production

A key theme of Obi’s message is the structural economic shift from a consumption-reliant country to a production-driven powerhouse. He highlighted the paradox of high local unemployment paired with an acute scarcity of skilled labor, which often forces local entrepreneurs to set up operations abroad.

“The situation in which unemployment remains high while Nigerian entrepreneurs establish businesses elsewhere because skilled labour is scarce must be confronted decisively,” Obi asserted, framing the challenge as a critical necessity for the common good.

Rebuilding Trust and National Values

Beyond economic and educational reforms, Obi’s 2027 blueprint places significant emphasis on character and civic education. By fostering shared national values and trust, his administration seeks to introduce a tripartite approach to governance that strengthens leadership integrity and enterprise across Nigeria.
