In a bold political move, Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential hopeful Peter Obi has thrown down the gauntlet to actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo. Obi has declared his readiness to completely withdraw from the 2027 presidential race if Okonkwo can produce any verifiable evidence proving him unfit to hold public office.
The high-stakes drama unfolded following a defamation lawsuit filed by the former Anambra State Governor against Okonkwo. Okonkwo, who previously served as Obi’s spokesperson, was recently appointed as the spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The Defamation Suit and the Call for Accountability
During a candid interview with popular media personality Chude Jideonwo, Obi clarified that his legal action is not an attempt to stifle free speech or suppress political opposition. Instead, he framed the lawsuit as a necessary mechanism to compel Okonkwo to either back up his frequent public insinuations or face the legal consequences of defamation.
According to Obi, his former ally has repeatedly claimed to possess sensitive, damaging secrets from his time working within Obi’s camp. Rather than allowing these rumors to linger, Obi wants them brought into the courtroom and the public eye.
The 2027 Election Ultimatum
Obi emphasized that Nigerian voters deserve absolute transparency from anyone seeking the country’s highest office. He expressed that he has nothing to hide and welcomes any genuine scrutiny of his character and track record.
“I want Kenneth Okonkwo to bring out all the ‘hidden things’ that he has on me,” Obi asserted during the interview. “If I am not qualified after his revelation, then I’ll stop running for the election.”
He further explained that Okonkwo had dared him to take legal action, promising to expose damaging secrets if provoked. “Kenneth Okonkwo said, as my spokesperson, he had so many hidden things that if he’s provoked or sued, he will bring them out. And that’s the only thing I’m suing him for to bring those things out,” Obi added.
A Precedent for Nigerian Politics
This escalating feud highlight a growing demand for accountability and fact-based campaigning in Nigeria’s political landscape. By challenging his accuser in court, Obi aims to put an end to unsubstantiated smear campaigns, setting a potential precedent for how political disputes and personal character attacks are handled ahead of the 2027 general elections.
