The political landscape in Nigeria has witnessed another dramatic turn as the prominent opposition figure and former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, was reportedly barred from entering Benue State. The incident, which unfolded on Tuesday, September 8, involved a standoff with both security operatives and suspected political thugs, sparking intense discussions across social media platforms.

According to reports circulating online, Peter Obi’s official photographer, Esther Umoh, revealed that their team was intercepted shortly after arriving in the state. Umoh alleged that “sponsored thugs” had set up a blockade on Boko Road, close to the Air Force Base, effectively halting their convoy’s progress. She asserted that the blockage was a calculated move to deny Obi entry into Benue State.

As the situation developed, Umoh further disclosed that despite Obi’s willingness to proceed and navigate the situation, security personnel stationed at the scene actively prevented him from doing so. The blockade has drawn sharp criticism from Obi’s supporters online, with many calling out the heavy-handed approach of the security agencies and the deployment of non-state actors to disrupt the movement of political leaders.

A History of Political Friction in Benue State

The incident occurs against a backdrop of long-standing friction between Peter Obi and the Benue State government, led by Governor Hyacinth Alia. Alia, a former Catholic priest, assumed office on May 29, 2023, under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Tensions between the state administration and Obi first became highly public in April 2025, when Governor Alia cautioned Obi against visiting Benue for a planned humanitarian outreach to internally displaced persons (IDPs). At the time, the governor argued that any high-profile visit conducted without prior state approval and official security coordination could not be guaranteed safe.

This stance was reinforced in July 2025 when the Benue State government issued an official public notice signed by Tersoo Kula, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor. The statement warned that the state was not expecting any “August visitors” and advised high-profile individuals whose visits might attract large political gatherings to stay away, reiterating that the state government could not guarantee their safety. Critics have widely interpreted these security warnings as political maneuvers aimed at keeping opposition figures out of the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.
