The General Superintendent of the Deeper Life Bible Church, Pastor William Folorunso Kumuyi, has put to rest lingering speculations regarding the future leadership of the ministry. Addressing his congregation, the octogenarian cleric firmly ruled out the possibility of handing over the reins of the church to any of his children.
Pastor Kumuyi, who recently celebrated his 85th birthday, made this clarification in a video that has since gone viral. He emphasized that the global ministry is not a family enterprise or a private estate, but a spiritual institution that belongs solely to Jesus Christ.
Biblical Precedents on Succession
To support his stance, the respected holiness preacher drew parallels from the New Testament church. He noted that early Christian leaders such as Peter, Paul, and John did not hand over leadership of the early church to their children or relatives. Instead, spiritual leadership must be guided strictly by divine orchestration.
The cleric remarked that the work of God must be done God’s way, emphasizing that succession in the church must align with the sovereign will of God rather than human arrangements or familial ties.
Recalling the ‘Retirement’ Controversy
This is not the first time the issue of succession in Deeper Life has come to the forefront. In 2025, Pastor Kumuyi addressed a sermon delivered during a church Bible study by a younger preacher who suggested that ‘there is no leadership without a successor.’
At the time, Kumuyi described the subtle push for his retirement as ‘too much,’ asserting that only God has the authority to appoint the next leader of the church. He reiterated that human manipulation has no place in spiritual transitions.
Public Reactions
The clear stance of the Deeper Life founder has generated widespread praise across social media platforms. Many netizens commended the veteran evangelist for his integrity, contrasting his approach with other religious organizations that are run like family businesses.
- Many praised his commitment to keeping the church aligned with biblical standards.
- Others highlighted the importance of spiritual maturity over nepotism in ministry.
