Twenty-seven days after the distressing abduction of students and educators from the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde has provided a vital update on the ongoing search-and-rescue mission. Latest intelligence reports indicate that the victims are currently being held within the sprawling, dense confines of the Old Oyo National Park.

A 2,500-Square-Kilometer Search Zone

In his recent official newsletter, Governor Makinde shed light on the immense scale of the security operation. The Old Oyo National Park, which spans approximately 2,500 square kilometres and cuts across ten different local government areas, presents a formidable geographic challenge for rescue teams. Its thick vegetation, rugged landscape, and numerous isolated hideouts make locating the abductors highly complex.

The Governor emphasized that navigating this difficult terrain requires strategic endurance and synchronized planning rather than rushed maneuvers. He noted that the sheer size of the park demands patience, careful coordination, and sustained efforts from all security personnel involved to ensure a successful outcome and keep the victims out of harm’s way.

Multi-Agency Operations Underway

To bypass these physical hurdles, Oyo State has mobilized multiple security formations to work in tandem. These agencies are deploying intelligence-driven strategies to systematically close in on the kidnappers’ suspected strongholds. According to Makinde, every legal avenue and resource is being utilized to secure the safe return of the hostages.

The ongoing rescue efforts focus on several key pillars:

  • Active Intelligence Gathering: Security operatives are continuously analyzing signals and field reports to map out the abductors’ movement patterns.
  • Inter-Agency Collaboration: Joint forces are combining resources to secure the perimeter of the vast forest reserve.
  • Targeted Operations: Specialized units are conducting strategic sweeps in high-probability areas within the park.

A Call for Public Vigilance and Discretion

With anxiety mounting among families and residents, Governor Makinde cautioned the public against spreading unverified rumors online. He warned that misinformation has the potential to compromise active security protocols, disrupt tactical plans, and inadvertently endanger the lives of the captives and rescue teams.

Instead of sharing unconfirmed reports, the Governor urged Oyo citizens to remain watchful and report any suspicious activities through the state’s dedicated toll-free emergency line, 615. He concluded with an expression of unwavering hope, asking the community to keep the abducted students and teachers in their prayers and asserting, “We will get them home safely.”
