Akure, Ondo State – Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has officially flagged off the 2026 bursary, scholarship, and financial assistance programme, committing N400 million to support 13,360 students of Ondo State origin currently enrolled in tertiary institutions across Nigeria. The significant initiative, aimed at bolstering educational development, was launched on Tuesday at the Cocoa Conference Centre of the Governor’s Office in Akure, the state capital.
Extensive Support Across Student Categories
During the event, Governor Aiyedatiwa provided a detailed breakdown of the beneficiaries, highlighting the inclusive nature of the scheme. The programme will see 11,907 students receiving bursary awards, while 614 outstanding students have been granted scholarships. Additionally, special provisions have been made for 239 Law School students, 500 medical students undergoing clinical training, and 100 physically challenged students who will receive dedicated financial assistance.
Education: A Cornerstone of Development Under “OUR EASE” Agenda
Emphasizing the foundational role of education, Governor Aiyedatiwa described it as “the seed from which every great society blossoms and the foundation of sustainable development.” He reiterated that his administration has strategically invested in the state’s children, communities, and future, aligning these efforts with a central component of his government’s “OUR EASE” development agenda.
The Governor further elaborated on the substantial resources dedicated to education within the 2026 Budget of Economic Consolidation. These allocations include plans for the construction and rehabilitation of 500 basic schools statewide. Furthermore, the administration has commenced a Digital Literacy Programme, involving the distribution of digital tablets to students in 50 public schools. This initiative, Governor Aiyedatiwa noted, is designed to equip students with critical digital skills, ensuring they can navigate an increasingly technology-driven world and capitalize on emerging opportunities.
Beyond student aid and infrastructure, the government is also actively investing in its teaching staff and has recently recognized outstanding students, dedicated teachers, and exemplary National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) award recipients, fostering a culture of academic excellence and reward.
Commissioner Applauds Governor, Announces Further Educational Interventions
Professor Igbekele Ajibefun, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, lauded Governor Aiyedatiwa’s unwavering commitment to the educational development, welfare, and empowerment of Ondo State students. He specifically praised the Governor for approving the N400 million and for the timely release of the funds, which made the programme’s implementation possible.
Professor Ajibefun also revealed other significant educational approvals by the Governor. These include the release of N633.918 million for the payment of 2026 WASSCE registration fees for students in public secondary schools across the state. Additionally, Governor Aiyedatiwa has approved the immediate implementation of the Federal Government’s agreement with unions on a new salary structure for the state’s tertiary institutions, coupled with a substantial increase in subvention to enable these institutions to effectively implement the new structure.
