The Ogun State Government on Monday in Abeokuta directed top public officials in the state to engage in farming and other agricultural activities.
A statement by the Commissioner for Information, Mr Yusuph Olaniyonu, said the directive was issued on Monday by Governor Ibikunle Amosun during the weekly Executive Council Meeting.
Olaniyonu said the decision was part of efforts by the state government to promote agriculture in the state.
“The government has therefore directed top public officers to apply to the Ministry of Agriculture for farm lands and follow due process like any member of the public,” he added.
He, however, noted that the government would monitor compliance to ensure that beneficiaries engage such allocated land for agricultural purpose.
He said, “With this policy, other members of the public will take a cue from those in government by engaging in farming and one form of agriculture or the other.
“Senior public officers are expected to show good examples that agriculture is the mainstay of our economy in Ogun.
“The aim of this back-to-farm policy is to boost food production in order to feed ourselves and others and to generate employment opportunities for our people.
“The government is to adapt such lofty agricultural policies that will not only boost our revenue but make all of us partners in our mission to rebuild our state.’’
