Paris Saint-Germain star Nuno Mendes has responded to recent remarks from Portugal’s national team captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, who criticized players who don’t seem to take joy in representing their country.
Mendes is among the players opting to sit out the November international break, with Portugal set to play Poland at the Estadio do Dragao on November 15.
Ronaldo voiced disappointment over players lacking enthusiasm for national team duty, saying during his Quinas de Platina award acceptance in Portugal on November 11 (via Tribuna), “When I joined the national team at 18, my dream was just to earn my first cap. Now, I’ve reached 25, 50, and why not aim for 100? Or even 150, 200? Representing the national team is an immense source of pride.”
He added, “Even after winning so many trophies, nothing compares to playing for Portugal. So yes, it’s disappointing to see some players not eager to represent our country. Cherish these moments—they pass quickly.”
In response, Mendes shared his perspective with reporters, saying, “Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Speaking for myself, I’m incredibly proud to represent Portugal, and I think that pride shows. I give everything on the pitch and in training, and I’ll always be committed to being here whenever possible.”
