The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is preparing for a significant nationwide mobilization, advocating for a comprehensive review of the national minimum wage and the establishment of a national minimum pension for retirees. This pivotal announcement was made by NLC President Joe Ajaero on Monday during the inauguration of the Godwin Abumisi Pensioners’ Legacy House and Multipurpose Hall in Abuja.
Ajaero underscored a strategic shift in organised labour’s approach, stating that future campaigns would integrate demands for improved pensioner welfare alongside the traditional pursuit of higher wages for active workers. “The Nigeria Labour Congress is currently in the preparatory stages for a major national struggle for a comprehensive review of the national minimum wage,” he declared.
Addressing Historical Injustice and Economic Hardship
The NLC president vehemently criticised the current situation, labelling it a “historical injustice” that individuals who dedicated their productive years to public service are often left struggling below the poverty line post-retirement. He highlighted the severe economic pressures, noting that rampant inflation and the escalating cost of living have significantly worsened the plight of many pensioners, making it increasingly difficult for them to afford basic necessities.
Ajaero rallied retirees to maintain unity as the labour movement prepares for this extensive campaign, asserting that every pensioner deserves to live a life of dignity after decades of dedicated service to the nation.
Key Demands: Arrears and Financial Security
Beyond the broader push for a national minimum pension, Ajaero also pressed for the immediate settlement of all outstanding pension arrears. He stressed the imperative of implementing a robust pension system that provides concrete financial security for retirees. While the NLC has a consistent history of advocating for improved workers’ welfare, Ajaero’s remarks firmly established that forthcoming campaigns would give equal priority to safeguarding the rights and enhancing the living conditions of retired workers across Nigeria.
