Nigerian universities have achieved their most commendable performance yet in the prestigious 2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, a milestone celebrated by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa. The Minister asserted that this remarkable feat serves as clear evidence that the Federal Government’s comprehensive education reforms are yielding tangible and measurable results.

Announcing the achievement via his official X handle on Saturday, Dr. Alausa highlighted that a total of 24 Nigerian higher education institutions secured global rankings this year, an increase from the 21 institutions recognized in previous editions. This elevated representation positions Nigeria as the most prominent country in Sub-Saharan Africa within the global academic landscape.

Federal Institutions Lead the Charge

Delving deeper into the statistics, Dr. Alausa revealed that out of the 24 ranked universities, a significant 17 are federal institutions. This statistic, he noted, strongly underscores the substantial progress being made in fortifying the nation’s public higher education system.

The Minister extended his heartfelt congratulations to all recognized institutions, specifically mentioning prominent federal universities such as the University of Ibadan, the University of Lagos, and Bayero University, Kano, alongside others for their outstanding contributions.

Reforms Driving Global Recognition

Dr. Alausa emphasized that these impressive rankings extend beyond mere prestige. He articulated that they are a direct reflection of strategic investments by the government in crucial areas including research, innovation, digital transformation, robust quality assurance frameworks, infrastructure development, and enhanced governance. These concerted efforts, he stated, are now demonstrably translating into global recognition.

Further demonstrating a growing commitment to international best practices, the Minister also pointed out that an additional 27 Nigerian universities actively participated in this year’s assessment. This increased engagement, he observed, signifies a stronger dedication to transparency, global benchmarking, and a continuous pursuit of improvement across the sector.

Sustained Commitment to Education Renewal

Reaffirming the government’s unwavering resolve, Dr. Alausa reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to the Nigerian Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI). Under the visionary leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, this initiative aims to ensure that Nigerian universities are equipped to generate the essential knowledge, foster innovation, and cultivate the talent vital for driving Nigeria’s future socio-economic development. The Minister assured that the work in this critical sector is ongoing.

Other Noteworthy Achievements

In a related development, PUNCH Online previously reported on another significant achievement in global higher education. Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), distinguished itself in the 2026 Times Higher Education Sustainability Impact Rankings, emerging as Nigeria’s highest-ranked institution. ABUAD secured an impressive 72nd position globally, making it the only Nigerian university to break into the global top 100 in this specialized ranking. Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria was also among the institutions recognized in the Sustainability Impact Ratings for 2026.
