A Nigerian legal practitioner, Zaenab Olawunmi Adams, Esq., has filed a formal complaint against telecommunications giant MTN Nigeria, demanding a comprehensive audit of her internet data after a staggering 708.55GB of her annual data package disappeared in just over three months.

Adams, who purchased an 800GB annual data subscription expecting it to last a year, was shocked to discover that only about 11.4 percent of her allocation remained active. According to MTN’s records, approximately 708.55GB had been drained within 104 days, leaving her with a meager 91.45GB balance.

Unusual Consumption Pattern Sparks Concern

In her formal letter of complaint addressed to MTN Nigeria’s customer care, Adams strongly disputed the rapid depletion rate, emphasizing that her daily digital footprint does not justify such high data usage. She pointed out that she is not a heavy internet user and operates on a very straightforward setup.

MTN Apologizes to Nigerians Over Data Plan Price Hike

“I do not use multiple devices on the line, I am not a gamer, and my ordinary internet usage is substantially limited to routine activities such as social media, messaging, browsing and other personal online activities on a single mobile device,” Adams stated, highlighting the discrepancy between her actual online habits and the recorded consumption.

Demands for Complete Data Transparency

To get to the bottom of the rapid depletion, the lawyer is demanding a complete and transparent technical review of her account. She has requested that MTN Nigeria provide comprehensive records of her data usage covering the period from May 15 to August 27.

Specifically, Adams has asked the telecommunications provider to supply:

  • A chronological statement showcasing her running data balance and subsequent deductions.
  • The precise date and time of every individual data-consumption session.
  • The exact volume of data deducted during each identified session.
  • Information pinpointing the specific applications, services, or web destinations responsible for the most significant data consumption, where technically feasible.

Adams asserted that the speed of the depletion raises legitimate concerns that require a proper technical audit. She is currently awaiting a formal response and the requested data logs from MTN Nigeria to independently verify the company’s claims.
