Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has instructed all council chairmen to pay off the pension and salary arrears owed to all state civil servants by Monday, December 23 at noon at the latest.
This was disclosed in a statement on Monday by Monday Uzor, the governor’s chief press secretary.
Nwifuru, outraged by the moves of the local government chairmen, called the delayed payment of salaries and pensions to local government workers in the state as worrying.
He emphasized that such a depressing experience runs counter to his administration’s pledge to provide good governance based on the needs of the people, as reported by The Guardian.
The governor warned that he would not fold his arms and allow people to sabotage his effort to execute the social contract with
Nwifuru went on to say that if the October and November salaries are not paid by Monday at 2:00 PM, the LG chiefs should respectfully submit their resignation letter.
“By 2 pm tomorrow, all the staff of the Local Government should receive their salaries and pensions,” he said.
“We are determined to deliver good governance to our people. If you are for us, you join us in what we are doing; if you are not, you leave.”
“If by 2 pm tomorrow, staff are not paid October and November salaries, the chairmen should resign,” he added.
