Twelve years after the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has stripped the American 4×400m relay team of the gold medal it won and officially re-awarded the medal to the quartet that represented Nigeria at the event.
The Nigerian team was made up of the late Sunday Bada and Jude Monye, Clement Chukwu and Enefiok Udo-Ubon.
The decision to re-award the medal to Nigeria was reached at a meeting of IOC executive board.
The US team was stripped of the medal because a member of its team Antonio Pettigrew, who has since committed suicide, admitted that he was doping at the time.
Pettigrew was disqualified in August 2008,but the IOC delayed in reallocating the medal because the body was awaiting any new information from an on-going investigation into an American doping scandal.
With this latest development, Nigeria, Jamaica, Bahamas now are in the annals for having won gold, silver and bronze at the event.
