The Nigeria Police Force has provided a detailed update on the fatal shooting of 28-year-old singer Mene Ogidi by ASP Nuhu Usman in Effurun.
In a video statement, the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, explained the sequence of events leading to the incident and the actions taken afterward.
According to the statement, Ogidi had received a parcel sent from Yenagoa through a driver. After collecting it, he reportedly went to a motor park to forward the package to Sapele, with the recipient’s details clearly written on it.
During a search, the parcel was found to contain a fabricated Beretta pistol and four rounds of live ammunition. Bystanders at the park carried out a citizen’s arrest and alerted the police.
ASP Nuhu Usman and his team responded to the scene and took custody of the suspect. However, instead of following standard procedures, the officer allegedly shot and killed the already restrained and unarmed Ogidi.
The police confirmed that his remains have been deposited in a mortuary and that an autopsy will be conducted.
An internal investigation ordered by police leadership found that the actions of the officer and his team amounted to misconduct, abuse of power, and behavior likely to disturb public peace, leading to the unlawful killing.
Following the findings, ASP Nuhu and three other officers have been arrested and are currently in custody. Disciplinary processes have been completed, and all officers involved have been recommended for dismissal.
The Police Service Commission has approved the recommendation, and their dismissal has taken immediate effect. The case has also been forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation for further legal action.
Meanwhile, the driver who transported the parcel and two vigilante members connected to the case are still on the run, with security operatives working to track them down.
Authorities assured the public, especially the victim’s family, that justice will be pursued and that officers who break the law will not be protected.
