Nigeria’s now has the biggest economy on the continent according to official figures released by the Statistician-General of the Federation, Mr. Yemi Kale, while releasing the 2013 rebased Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country figures in Abuja yesterday.
Data made available showed that for 2013 the total value of goods and services produced last year stood at N80.22trn (about $509.9bn) compared with South Africa’s estimates of $370.3bn.
Though most countries re-base every three years, Nigeria had not updated the components in its GDP base since 1990.
The new GDP figures are based on revised estimates emanating form a year-long rebasing exercise aimed at providing an up-to-date picture of the size and composition of the nation’s economy.
With the new figures Nigeria has overtaken South Africa to become the largest economy in the continent of Africa and 26th globally.
