In a major push to overhaul the nation’s security architecture, President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to deploying emerging technologies, intelligence-driven operations, and robust local defense manufacturing to eradicate terrorism and other security challenges facing Nigeria.
The President disclosed that plans are already underway to accelerate the modernization of the Nigerian Armed Forces. This comprehensive upgrade will focus on substantial investments in advanced military hardware, intensive personnel training, and enhanced operational capacity across all security theaters.
A Tech-Forward Approach to National Security
Speaking at the grand finale of the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration and the inaugural African Land Forces Forum (ALFF) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, President Tinubu emphasized that modern warfare requires sophisticated, data-driven solutions. Represented at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the President highlighted the shifting dynamics of global security.
“My administration is firmly committed to countering contemporary threats through the adoption of emerging technologies and the building of capacity across all battle spaces, thereby improving operational planning and combat readiness,” the President stated. He added that consistent investment in research and development remains a cornerstone of the federal government’s defense strategy to foster homegrown military innovations.
Revitalizing DICON and Reducing Foreign Dependence
A central pillar of the new strategy is the ongoing revitalization of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON). President Tinubu noted that while previous governments had attempted to restructure the state-owned defense corporation, his administration is determined to see the transformation through to completion.
By boosting domestic manufacturing, Nigeria aims to achieve the following:
- Strengthen local defense capabilities and reduce vulnerability to foreign supply chain disruptions.
- Create highly skilled jobs for Nigerian youths within the engineering and defense sectors.
- Foster regional self-reliance in military hardware production.
The President remarked that these initiatives would foster the confidence that naturally comes with a nation’s ability to defend and arm itself.
Strengthening Regional Alliances and Honoring Troops
Addressing the maiden African Land Forces Forum, organized in partnership with Great Minds Event Management, President Tinubu hailed the platform as a significant milestone in defense diplomacy. The forum serves to deepen strategic dialogue, share vital intelligence, and enhance cooperative combat capabilities across African borders.
In closing, the President paid glowing tribute to the officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces, describing them as global symbols of patriotism and courage. He lauded their sacrifices, noting that their efforts to neutralize threats extend beyond Nigeria’s borders, making a tangible contribution to West African stability and global peace.
