The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced its intention to conduct fresh congresses to fill any vacancies arising from candidate defections, following the resignation of its Bauchi State governorship candidate, Ibrahim Kashim.
Kashim, who previously served as the Secretary to the Bauchi State Government, confirmed his decision to leave the NDC. His departure has sparked widespread speculation that he may be considering a move to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the crucial 2027 general elections.
NDC’s Swift Response and Electoral Act Activation
Hours after Kashim’s announcement, the NDC moved quickly to mitigate the impact. In a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja, NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, affirmed the party’s commitment to utilizing the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026. This move will allow the party to conduct new congresses in any constituency affected by a candidate’s exit.
While Director’s statement did not explicitly name Kashim, sources familiar with the development confirmed to PUNCH Online that the former government official was indeed the central figure in this unfolding situation. The same sources also hinted at the possibility of other NDC candidates in Bauchi State following Kashim’s lead.
The party also used the opportunity to caution its members against what it described as ‘inducements’ from the APC. The NDC accused the ruling party of deliberately attempting to weaken opposition forces in anticipation of the 2027 polls, urging supporters to remain steadfast and committed to the party’s vision.
Ibrahim Kashim’s Stance and Political Background
In his resignation statement, Kashim conveyed that his decision was a result of careful consideration. He maintained that his departure from the NDC would not diminish his dedication to political reform and socio-economic development within Bauchi State. He further assured his supporters that his political movement would continue, although he has yet to disclose which political party he intends to join.
Kashim’s political career includes a significant tenure as Secretary to the Bauchi State Government under Governor Bala Mohammed, an appointment he held from June 2021 until his resignation in December 2024. His departure from the SSG role occurred amidst a period of notable political tension between Governor Mohammed and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Fluid Political Landscape Ahead of 2027
The political landscape across Nigeria remains highly dynamic, with allegiance shifts becoming a regular feature as parties gear up for the 2027 general elections. While the NDC addresses a significant defection, other parties are also experiencing movements within their ranks. The constant flux underscores the competitive nature of Nigerian politics.
Earlier reports highlighted a wave of defections, including 21 local government chairmen and 226 councillors, who abandoned the PDP for the APC. Conversely, the NDC also recently welcomed a former APC leader from Kumbotso LGA in October 2026, an event hosted by NDC’s Vice Presidential Candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at his Kano residence, signaling ongoing realignments across the political spectrum.
