Global hip hop star Nicki Minaj has revealed that her spiritual connection to Nigeria stems from her pastor, who is originally from the West African nation. Speaking during a recent public event, the rapper called on fellow celebrities and social media influencers to use their platforms to bring attention to reported violence against Christians in the region.
A Personal Connection to Nigeria
Minaj made the comments during an X Takeover event held at Tesla’s Giga Texas facility in Austin, Texas. Addressing the audience, she explained that her link to Nigeria extends beyond her massive local fanbase, often called Nigerian Barbz. She credited her Nigerian pastor with deepening her personal relationship with the country and bringing the plight of its Christian population to her notice.
The rap icon noted that accounts describing the brutal treatment of individuals solely because of their Christian faith deeply disturbed her. She expressed frustration that the ongoing crisis has not received greater attention on the international stage.
Calling for Greater Advocacy and Media Focus
Reflecting on the silence surrounding the situation, Minaj pointed out that public figures often avoid speaking about serious issues when those topics are not considered popular or fashionable to discuss. She emphasized that uncomfortable realities still require strong advocates to bring about change.
Minaj voiced hope that more influencers and public figures would join her campaign to raise awareness about religious violence in Nigeria. She added that she intends to do even more in the future to support human rights initiatives and advocate for affected communities.
