The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has rejected reports prevalent in social media that  it had been providing inadequate meals to internally displaced persons (IDPs) in refugee camps in Maiduguri.

North East Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, Alhaji Mohammed Kanar, in an interaction with media, expressed surprise at the suggestions.

“The federal and state governments have through their emergency agencies and in collaboration with other humanitarian communities, been providing charitable assistance to address the needs of IDPs living within designated camps as well as those who are living with relations,” he said.

“Our organisation, in partnership with Borno State Ministry of Health and other civil society, health and human rights groups renders assistance in settling bills of referral medical cases of vulnerable IDPs within camps and victims of bomb blasts as well.”

Kanar pointed out that recently, NEMA has granted N30 million support to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) to enable them timely respond to the needs of health cases referred to the hospital.

“Similar support will be provided to other major hospitals in due course,” Kanar said.
