The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has approved an emergency weekly stipend of N100,000 for individuals placed in mandatory isolation or quarantine following a confirmed Ebola case in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Announcing the decision during a press briefing in Abuja, NCDC Director-General Dr. Jide Idris explained that the financial assistance was introduced after several contacts raised concerns about sustaining their families during the mandatory monitoring period. The financial support comes in addition to existing interventions, as the health agency is already providing fully funded accommodation and feeding for quarantined individuals.
Easing Financial Pressure and Ensuring Cooperation
Dr. Idris described the payment as an emergency measure created outside the agency’s original response plan. He stressed that the intervention is intended to reduce financial anxiety and encourage complete cooperation with public health containment efforts, adding that the package will be reviewed as the situation develops.
Furthermore, the NCDC chief urged state governments across Nigeria to prepare funding, stock medical supplies, and train personnel for public health emergencies rather than relying entirely on the central response in the FCT. He emphasized that every state must maintain emergency readiness to address potential outbreaks rapidly.
Monitoring Contacts and Strengthening Containment
Nigeria has registered one confirmed Ebola case, involving a female traveler who arrived from Uganda and tested positive for the Bundibugyo virus strain. Official timelines indicate that she began showing symptoms on October 7, sought medical care in Abuja on October 11, and received a confirmed laboratory diagnosis on October 20. The World Health Organization (WHO) classified the incident as an imported case.
Health authorities have mapped out 53 primary contacts who are undergoing a strict 21-day monitoring protocol. Key measures under the response strategy include:
- Targeted Contact Tracing: Monitored individuals include healthcare workers, household members, domestic staff, and laboratory personnel responsible for sample collection.
- Exposure Risk Assessment: Field epidemiologists are conducting regular follow-up checks, with immediate testing mandated for anyone displaying symptoms.
- Active Isolation Support: Dedicated isolation facilities are being provided for contacts who require accommodation. One contact who recently felt unwell tested negative for the virus.
The NCDC is also reinforcing infection prevention controls across healthcare facilities nationwide by training personnel and providing essential protective equipment and testing supplies. Health officials advise the public to stay informed through verified health channels and support ongoing contact tracing efforts.
