The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), in partnership with the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA), has successfully suspended MovieBox.ng, a website accused of illegally streaming pirated movies, music, and live sports content.
In a statement released on Thursday in Abuja, NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Ijeoma Egbunike, confirmed that the site was taken offline on July 20, 2025, following directives from the Commission’s Director-General, Dr. John Asein.
Dr. Asein explained that the move is part of the ongoing “Stand Together Against Online Piracy (STOP)” campaign aimed at combating digital piracy, with strong backing from stakeholders across Nigeria’s entertainment and broadcast industries.
“They use multiple mirror domains to access and promote pirated content, with domain histories linked to known piracy operations,” Asein stated, highlighting the evasive tactics of MovieBox.ng.
He commended NiRA for its swift response in suspending the domain and urged internet service providers, registrars, and intermediaries to promptly act on future takedown requests in line with the Copyright Act, 2022.
The NCC added that it is actively tracking and working to disable other mirror sites linked to MovieBox.ng while advising the public to avoid illegal streaming platforms, warning that such sites not only violate copyright laws but also expose users to malware, identity theft, and online scams.
