During the ongoing nationwide protests, a family in Kano State is pleading for justice after their 25-year-old son was killed amid the unrest. The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, August 3, in the Rijiyar Lemo and Kurnar Asabe areas of Fagge Local Government Area, where at least eight people lost their lives.
The clash began when protesters in Rijiyar Lemo, along Katsina Road, confronted police officers. Among the deceased was Bashir Muhammad Lawan, who was fatally shot during the confrontation.
Bashir’s family, devastated by his death, shared the painful details of the incident. His father, Malam Muhammad Lawal, described how Bashir had been out for just 15 minutes before joining the protest, which started peacefully. The situation escalated around Zuhr time when security forces intervened and began dispersing the crowd.
“He was protesting peacefully with others when the security agents arrived. They began shooting after the protesters started chanting ‘bama yi, bama yi’ (to hell with you),” the grieving father said.
Witnesses and relatives assert that the police used live ammunition in response to the protesters’ chants and booing, which intensified the violence.
Khadija Bala, Bashir’s elder sister, described the tragic moment, she said;
“He was trying to take cover when he was struck by bullets. They were protesting peacefully but were branded as ‘yan daba’ (thugs). Poor people should not be denied their right to protest. We demand justice for Bashir.”
