Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform policies, labeling them harmful to the northern region and a potential threat to Nigeria’s unity.
During a courtesy visit by the Christian community to the Bauchi Government House as part of their annual Christmas homage on Wednesday, Mohammed voiced his concerns about the reforms, claiming they disproportionately favor certain parts of the country while marginalizing the North.
He urged the Federal Government to revisit the policies to ensure they reflect the interests of all Nigerians. The Governor also warned against ignoring public grievances, stating that such actions could lead to unrest.
In his words, “We are facing serious wahala in this country. Hunger is everywhere, and the masses are suffering. This tax reform is not only anti-North but also a threat to the unity of our country.”
He emphasized the need for inclusive leadership and responsiveness to the people’s concerns, stating, “The government must listen to the people. This is a democracy, not a dictatorship or an oligarchy. Policies should never be imposed on the people without considering their welfare.”
Mohammed further cautioned, “If you ignore the cries of the people, you are inviting anarchy. These reforms are not helping northern Nigeria. How do you expect us to pay salaries and build roads when you are taking away our revenue sources? This is unacceptable.”
He called on leaders to recognize when policies fail, urging them to prioritize fairness and justice. “No leader should feel too proud or arrogant to admit when a policy is not working. If something is not popular with the people, change it. This is not about religion or tribe; it is about fairness, justice, and the unity of Nigeria,” he said.
Addressing the Christian community, Mohammed expressed gratitude for their longstanding support. “I have always enjoyed the backing of my Christian brothers and sisters, even from my days in the ANPP. You believed in me despite my limitations, and I appreciate that. Whatever I do for you, it is because you deserve it,” he added.
