Microsoft has announced a significant reduction in force, laying off approximately 4,800 employees about 2.1% of its global workforce. The job cuts are heavily impacting the tech giant’s Xbox video game division as part of a sweeping strategic reorganization.

Reorganizing Xbox Amid Financial Pressures

The decision comes as the company seeks to “reset” its gaming brand in the face of stiff competition and shifting market dynamics. According to an internal memo from Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, who assumed leadership of the division earlier this year, more layoffs are expected to follow as the business restructures throughout the year.

Sharma candidly addressed the division’s financial struggles in her message to staff, stating that the current business model is “not healthy.” She highlighted that Xbox is currently operating at profit margins that are “3-10x lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses,” underscoring the urgent need for structural change.

The Looming Hardware Crisis

A key driver behind the restructuring is what Sharma described as a severe “hardware crisis” plaguing the gaming industry. Escalating costs for console components have squeezed profit margins significantly, making it increasingly difficult to compete sustainably against chief rivals Sony’s PlayStation and the Nintendo Switch.

Key details of the restructuring plan include:

  • Workforce Reduction: 4,800 jobs cut globally, representing 2.1% of Microsoft’s total staff.
  • Strategic Reorganization: A broader overhaul is underway to reset the Xbox division and boost low profit margins.
  • Industry Challenges: High component costs continue to drive a severe hardware crisis for major console manufacturers.

As Microsoft navigates this transitional period, the gaming industry at large continues to grapple with escalating production costs and changing consumer habits, signaling a challenging road ahead for major hardware platforms.
