Manchester City have officially ushered in a new era at the Etihad Stadium, confirming the appointment of Italian tactician Enzo Maresca as their new first-team manager. Maresca, 46, succeeds legendary coach Pep Guardiola, signing a three-year contract that secures his position at the club until the summer of 2029.
The appointment marks a homecoming for Maresca, who has enjoyed two highly successful previous stints with the Manchester giants. Charged with the task of steering City back to the pinnacle of English football after a rare two-year drought without the Premier League title, the Italian expressed immense pride in taking the reins.
A Proven Connection with Manchester City
Maresca is no stranger to the high-pressure environment of East Manchester. He famously served as one of Guardiola’s key assistants during the historic 2022-23 campaign, a season that saw Manchester City claim an extraordinary treble of the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and FA Cup. Prior to that, Maresca demonstrated his tactical prowess by guiding the club’s Elite Development Squad to the Premier League 2 title during the 2020-21 season.
“Manchester City is a club I know very well and to have the chance to manage this team is a brilliant opportunity for me,” Maresca stated during his unveiling. “City is an incredibly well-run football club. Everything they do is innovative, planned and purposeful. For a manager, that is a dream situation. It provides the consistency I need to do my job effectively.”
The Drama Behind the Stamford Bridge Departure
While Maresca’s return to Manchester had been widely anticipated following rumors of Guardiola’s departure, the finalization of the deal was delayed by complex negotiations with Chelsea. The West London club demanded a substantial compensation package, reported to be worth £17 million ($22 million), to release Maresca from his contractual obligations.
Chelsea released a remarkably candid statement alongside the announcement, revealing that Maresca had previously indicated his desire to succeed Guardiola if the opportunity arose. The Stamford Bridge hierarchy expressed disappointment over his abrupt departure, noting that the coach had unexpectedly resigned in December 2025 before officially departing in January.
“In December 2025, our head coach unexpectedly and abruptly resigned from his position. Obviously, we felt let down,” the club stated.
Restoring Dominance and Playing Style
With the Chelsea chapter now closed, Maresca is focused entirely on the monumental task ahead. Known for his tactical flexibility and possession-based philosophy, he is eager to match the high expectations of the City faithful.
“I know the demands, and I know the expectations,” Maresca added. “The quality of the people who work here is what makes it so special… I want us to win, play good football and enjoy the pressure of representing Manchester City.”
