Workers at the Naivasha hospital ran away in fear when the body of Paul Mutora stirred as they carried out their work. The man, who had tried to take his own life by swallowing poisonous insecticide, was declared dead on Wednesday night.

The chief medic at the hospital has revealed the drug used to treat him slowed Mr Mutora’s heartbeat which may explain the bizarre series of events.

Dr Joseph Mburu told Kenya’s Standard newspaper: “This might have confused medical personnel, but the victim was saved before he could be embalmed.”

Mr Mutora’s family visited the morgue on Thursday to view his corpse before returning home prepare for his funeral. However later in the afternoon his grieving father was told his son was alive and well.

After rising from the dead Mr Mutora said: “This was a mistake from the start and I apologise to my father.”
