A man – found sitting on top of his car in a South Coast river after he had lost control of it – is being treated for moderate injuries.
Kwazulu Private Ambulance services said in a statement that its Shelly Beach-based unit responded to the crash at the Umzimkulu River in Port Shepstone at 1.30pm on Sunday afternoon.
“When paramedics arrived at the scene they found the patient sitting on top of his car which was in the water. He was rescued and brought to dry land and stabilised in the ambulance after which he was transported to hospital for further care,” said service spokeswoman Belinda Catchpole.
Catchpole told The Mercury that the motorist behind the 31-year-old victim had reported the incident to them.
“We have many rivers in this area and have responded to incidents like this one – sometimes involving taxis – where we’ve had to go in and rescue multiple patients.”
She said it appeared that the driver lost control of the light motor vehicle on the N2 and then plummeted about four metres down into the river.
“The police are investigating the incident further.”
