The Ogun State Police Command has arrested one Kayode Olubunmi, 37, for allegedly killing his 20-year-old cousin, Haruna Adeoye, over a bowl of rice given to them by a friend on Christmas Day.
The incident occurred at Ita Oluwo area of Ogijo, Sagamu Local Government Area of the state about 10:30p.m. when the suspect came back home drunk and flogged the deceased to death.
It was learnt that Olubunmi, before going for an outing, instructed his cousin to keep the rice for their dinner.
But Haruna, an orphan, who had been staying with the suspect for years, was said to have eaten the food before the stipulated time.
On arrival, the suspect was said to have used a stick to beat his cousin for flouting his instruction but it eventually turned out tragic.
Policemen from Ogijo Division subsequently arrested Olubunmi over the death.
Confirming the incident on Friday, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, said the suspect had already confessed to the crime.
Adejobi, who disclosed that Olubunmi had been detained by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, said the suspect would soon be charged to court.
Adejobi noted that the police team from Ogijo led by the Divisional Police Officer, Toyin Afolaogun, had concluded preliminary investigation and transferred the case to the SCID in Abeokuta.
Speaking with Saturday Independent from Police custody, on Friday, the suspect could not explain why he killed his cousin.
“Actually, I don’t know what really happened, I don’t know what came over me that day. Just exactly, what I have said in the statement, I just don’t know how it happened,” he stated.
