Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has revealed that The Polytechnic, Ibadan, will be renamed in memory of the late Dr. Omololu Olunloyo, a former governor of the state.
The announcement was made during a special interdenominational commendation service held on Thursday at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan, in honour of the late elder statesman.
Makinde stated that the institution, which has long stood as a pillar of higher education in Nigeria, will now bear Olunloyo’s name in tribute to his significant contributions to the state, particularly his service as the pioneer Rector of the institution.
“The institution will now be known as Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, Ibadan,” Makinde declared during his remarks.
Dr. Olunloyo, who died in April 2025 at the age of 90, was not only a former governor but also a passionate advocate for educational development in Oyo State.
Established in 1970, The Polytechnic, Ibadan has educated thousands of students across multiple disciplines and continues to rank among the top tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
