Liverpool FC has reportedly decided to uphold Diogo Jota’s contract by continuing to pay his salary to his family following his tragic passing.
In the early hours of Thursday, Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, were traveling through Zamora, Spain, en route to Santander to catch a ferry to England. Sadly, their journey ended in tragedy when a tire burst, causing their vehicle to crash and catch fire. Both brothers, including Andre — a professional footballer in Portugal’s second division — died at the scene.
Club to Keep Paying Jota’s Wages
According to Sportal, Liverpool plans to honor Jota’s memory with a tribute — potentially a mural at Anfield showcasing his final goal for the club — and will continue paying out his contract. The funds will go to his wife, Rute, whom he married just two weeks before the accident, and their three children.
Jota’s contract with Liverpool was set to run until June 30, 2027, with a reported annual salary of around $7 million, including bonuses.
The football community and fans remain in mourning, remembering the Portuguese forward for his contributions to the club — 65 goals in 182 matches over five seasons.
