Veteran highlife legend and folklorist Mike Ejeagha, best known as the inspiration behind the viral “Gwo Gwo Ngwo” dance trend, has died at the age of 95.
Reports confirm that the revered musician passed away on Friday around 8 p.m. at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu, following a long battle with illness.
His eldest son, Emma Ejeagha, is said to have confirmed the sad news.
Renowned for blending Igbo folklore and wise proverbs into captivating musical tales, Ejeagha earned praise for his unique storytelling style, which educated and entertained generations of listeners.
His influence was especially felt in the 1980s when his work became a staple on Nigerian radio, leaving behind a lasting cultural legacy.
In 2024, one of his songs resurfaced in popular culture when skit maker Brain Jotter revived it into the trending “Gwo Gwo Gwo” dance challenge.
