Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has expressed profound grief over the passing of veteran journalist, esteemed communication scholar, and former Commissioner for Education, Professor Idowu Sobowale. The renowned academic passed away on Thursday at the age of 85.

In a formal statement released on Friday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the death of the octogenarian as a major loss to both Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole.

An Illustrious Career in Journalism and Academia

Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the remarkable legacy of Professor Sobowale, recognizing him as one of Nigeria’s pioneer scholars in the field of mass communication. He noted that Sobowale’s career spanned vital roles, including serving as a courageous war correspondent and a dedicated public servant who made indelible contributions to the nation.

According to the governor, the scholar’s demise leaves a significant void in the education sector, particularly within mass communication studies, where his teachings shaped generations of media practitioners.

He described Sobowale as an academic who successfully bridged the gap between theory and practice, utilizing his rich, hands-on experience to elevate Nigeria’s educational, media, and administrative landscapes.

During his tenure as the Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Professor Sobowale was instrumental in implementing policies that advanced the state’s educational system.
